STEPH SELLS BIKES.
Hey, there! I’m Steph. I tune up and sell bikes on the side in Philadelphia. I thought this website would be a fun way to show off the bikes and give you all the info you’re curious about.
These are upcycled former bikeshare bikes. Spin is a mobility company owned by Ford. They got out of bikesharing and strictly do shared electric scooters now. These are great bikes in great condition – mechanically and cosmetically. I had a chance to buy a whole bunch to tune up and save from becoming scrap, and here we are.
Formerly used for bikesharing, they are low-maintenance, sturdy, and built to last. They are designed to be enjoyed by anyone with a comfortable upright ride. Both bike models have a Dutch influence in their frame design with a step-through style. This makes getting on and off the bike quick and easy with no bar to bump in to. They make the perfect city bike, or can be used as a modern beach cruiser at the shore. I love these bikes and ride mine daily in Philly.
Affordable Quality.
TWO DIFFERENT MODELS AVAILABLE.
Both bikes are similar in that they are nice, reliable, sturdy, and orange. All bikes have baskets and bells. They are all three-speeds – they have three gears which I have found is all I’ve ever needed. The bikes do not rely on a derailer to change gears, which contributes to their reliability and easy maintenance. They both have 19″ aluminum frames and 26″ airless tires – an awesome feature! This means no slow leaks, no unexpected flats while you’re out on a ride, and no spending all day changing tubes before you’re able to take your bike out. They’re ready to roll.
The key differences are traditional V brakes on the model with the little bar at the crux of the frame, and upgraded roller/drum brakes on the other model, without the bar. The model without the bar is a bit more stylish and has some other upgrades on the bike, like fancier grips and a slightly larger basket. See more info on specs below.
01. “SIMPLE” FRAME
This model features a lever-operated dropper seatpost, riser handlebars, and a handlebar mounted basket. It is build with the common 26″ (ISO 559) wheel size. The bike’s hubs and braking system uses the Shimano Nexus Inter 3 and roller brake at the rear tire. The front is a Sturmey-Archer X-FDD HDS72T — a combined 6V 2.4W hub generator and drum brake. Both hubs do a great job to ensure that brake feel is consistent in all weather conditions.
02. “BAR” FRAME
These Bar Frame models come in a slightly softer orange hue. They feature the 26×1-3/8″ (EA3) wheel size of Raleigh’s famously timeless 3-speed Sports models. They use conventional V-brakes front and back, with Sturmey-Archer hubs. The bike uses a quick-release seatpost and the same riser handlebars and similar front basket. A solid, sensible design overall.
FAQs.
Frequently Asked Questions.
You’re probably wondering – what is the price? It’s hard to say, exactly, because as the bikes are used, their condition varies slightly. If I know one has a bit of a bent basket, for instance, I’ll lower the price. Typically the upgraded “Simple” frame bikes sell for $350 and the “Bar” frame bikes sell for $270.
I’m always open to negotiating and will look through my inventory to find you a quality bike with an extra cosmetic blemish or two if that price range is prohibitive. I test ride all bikes myself before handing them off to you to be sure they are issue-free and in solid mechanical condition.
Of course! While I like to think I give everyone a “friends and family discount”, I can do an even better deal or offer free delivery when you are purchasing multiple bikes, which has been quite common.
The original manufacturer of the bikes is unknown to me, but they were built for Spin and their parent company Ford. Various parts on the bikes come from quality brands you’ll be familiar with — Shimano, Sturmey-Archer, and Tektro.
Aluminum. Other parts on the bike (like the fenders) are made of steel. This makes the bike fairly light and easy to carry up a short set of stairs, for instance.
Not that I’ve found. My dad, for example, is a 6′ 4″ big boy and thinks these are super comfy to ride – he has two he bought for himself and took back to Detroit. These are durable and sturdy bikes.
Since they were used as bikeshare bikes, these are meant to accommodate most adult riders. Through experience, it seems 5′ 3″ is the shortest comfortable ride and 6′ 5″ is the tallest. My personal suggested inseam is 28″ to 35″. I have sold bikes to shorter kiddos that were comfortable hopping on and off the seat when stopping if their feet didn’t touch the ground, since there is no bar in the middle.
Nope! Neither. They have modern, sturdy frames that sort of give off that appearance.
You’ll also find a solar panel in the bottom of the basket – this was previously used to charge the battery in the electric bikeshare locks, which have been removed.
They are used bikes in great condition mechanically and cosmetically. They were previously bikeshare bikes, so they were built to be low maintenance and sturdy.
DELIVERY INFO.
Delivery is available! I have a truck (yes, it’s a pain in Philadelphia, lol) and can deliver multiple bikes at a time. If you’re within a 15-minute drive of Northern Liberties, I can typically deliver for free. You’re welcome to come by and take your bike for a spin (pun intended) beforehand. For those located further away, delivery can typically range from $10-$50.
I’ll do my best to arrange delivery with you on a certain day if I know I’ll be headed somewhere in your direction, to avoid any delivery fees if possible. I’m super flexible and always try to work things out to get you a bike at the lowest price I can. For instance, I’m often in Perkasie, PA and wouldn’t charge to deliver a bike in that area or on the way.
Picking up the bike yourself can be arranged in either the Northern Liberties neighborhood in Philly, or in Perkasie.
Reviews.
WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING.
As I’m located in Philly, the majority of my customers have been located here as well. Many bikes have also found homes in DC, Virginia, Delaware, Maryland, and at the Jersey Shore. I’m happy to work out delivery in these areas — it helps when you’re interested in more than one bike.
“Yes, it has been wonderful. I can tell it is very well built. Thank you for delivering it :)”
